Brief Container Gardening Vacation

I went in to my local nursery to pick up some things. My head was buried as I looked around the main store for pots and bulbs. Then I went into the small greenhouse they keep running all winter, and I was transported.

First of all, it was so cold and windy outside that when I was walking my dog, earlier in the day, I was sure my face was going to fall off. In the greenhouse it was gently warm and the light filtering in looked like it had been set up for a film shoot.

Every plant was perfect and it all smelled just right. When I left, I felt as if I really had been on vacation.

Hello Kerry! Thanks for all your valuable container gardening info! Thanksgiving is already over–who can believe Nov. is almost over too!? I got a kick out of the “guilt” in container gardening. Wow!–that hits home. I arrange the Pool pots at our complex. This year I purchased nice new containers, at first all were growing so nicely, then the heat was intense in SE Denver, and what a chore trying to keep them evenly watered! I felt bad, even though everyone said how pretty they were, I knew they should have looked more robust. Sometimes that’s just how it goes, huh? Anyway I thank you for your reality outlook. Who does need that guilt? Have a wonderful Holiday season and cozy winter!

Hey Kathleen – Thanks for your kind words. I’m wishing you a happy and guilt free holiday season (I truly can’t believe that it’s even time to be saying that).

I loved your comment about how you felt as if you had taken a mini vacation after walking through the greenhouse. One thing I’ve noticed about gardens and greenhouses–it’s almost impossible not to smile while you are in one. When I go to public gardens, I spend almost as much time looking at the people as at the flowers, because everyone looks so happy.
