More Container Garden Carnage

Sunflower Carnage

I went away for a few days and have come back to some serious container garden carnage. Two beautiful eggplants, totally destroyed. Half of my peas, decimated. And my favorite, a huge basket of dwarf sunflowers that I had started from seed and were doing splendidly - chewed to a nub. Tomato plants nibbled on. Aaaaahhhhhhrrrrrr!!!!@#%$@#@%@!
I had promised myself to be more Zen this summer about losing plants to critters. Because here's something I know all too well, plant death is a big part of container gardening and sometimes it's a HUGE part.
At this point I'm just trying to breathe and be calm. At least the vermin didn't get my lettuce, which I had put up on a picnic table, and my potatoes and most of the tomatoes are doing fine.
The only funny thing about this is that the critters always eat the sunflowers I plant in container gardens or in the ground. However, they seem to have no interest in the sunflowers that fall out of the bird feeders and grow. I guess these critters have sophisticated taste.

We all tell ourselves that these creatures have to eat too, but it is very frustrating when we work so hard to grow them, to lose them to “freeloaders”!
You have my sympathy.
I had several chipmunks this year in my plants. And I have had toads!
I didn’t think that toads would do anything to plants. Aren’t they bug eaters. I all ways liked them in my garden. I am a big frog and toad lover though
I thought I was being kind…when I filled the bird feeder, I threw seed on the ground for the critters and larger birds…then I found the chipmunks were burying their seed in my pots and the squirrels were attacking the bird feeder when they ran out on the ground…so much for being nice…also, those advertisements on the side of your newsletter are VERY ANNOYING!!!I find it hard to concentrate on what I’m reading with the hype going on next to it…thanks for listening…
My critters have struck again. I had a container with beautiful oakleaf lettuce. I even put it up on my picnic table to keep it away from the ravaging hordes. They climbed right up and ate the whole thing. Arhhhhh.
I’m sorry if the ads are annoying you. Just so you know, I have no control over the ads that go up on the site. However, that said, I’m incredibly grateful, in these economic times, for any advertising we get.
