In many places there is still time to plant some vegetable container gardens. Since the critters ate all of my eggplants, I'm going to get some more seedlings and pot them up. I also love growing hot peppers, which are not only beautiful, a lot of them last well into fall. I haven't planted any yet, so I'll do it now.

Would love to hear what people are growing in their container gardens. You can either leave a comment below, or join the discussion in the container gardening forum.

Hi – I’m growing lettuce and tomatoes. I also have an herb garden in a container. It’s my first try at gardening and I’m so surprised that everything is still alive and I’m actually eating what I’ve grown!

Bravo! It still amazes me when I eat what I’ve grown.

Are there any veggies you can’t grow in containers?

As far as I know, you can grow any vegetable in a container. That said, for some veggies, you would need a really big container. Growing corn or watermelons can be done, and people do, but that is high degree of difficulty container gardening.

It also depends on your definition of a container garden. I’ve been tempted to call a raised bed a container garden.

I have about 20 heirloom and/or open pollinated tomatoe plants,15 hot peppers,3 types of basil, dill, tarragon, winter savory,lettuce,2 types of cucumbers, butternut/zucchini squash, sunflowers,Salpiglosis, zinnias, asters, stocks & marigolds all in various size containers. (Also some hybrid toms that were GIVEN to me.) When my plants were ready to put out but it was too cool I cut the bottom off of 2 gal plastic juice jugs and used them for mini hot houses until weather warmed up. Then I turned them over and strung them up and crammed a mater plant in them. They hang upside down and all is growing well.
