Container Gardening in 2009

By , About.com Guide   December 31, 2009

Follow me on:

2009 was a challenging year for many container gardeners, particularly those on the East Coast. That said it was also an exciting year. In general, gardening took off this past summer. As a silver lining to the black cloud that was the economy, many more people grew their own plants from seeds, and vegetable gardens in containers and otherwise, popped up everywhere, including spectacularly on the White House lawn.

People have asked me if I see any trends in container gardening. I think many of the trends are the same you'll see in general gardening.

I've made a list of recent Trends in Container Gardening.

I would also love to hear what you have to say about trends in container gardening. Click here to add your predictions or wishes for container gardening trends.

Even though we have 5 tillable acres and a large garden plot we do container gardening. Our land used to be pasture and the hardy meadow grasses are nearly impossible to to deal with. We have to cultivate a garden daily just to keep them manageable. So we built several redwood planters boxes waist high to grow beets lettuces and the like. Other times I’ve planted my lettuces in pots with great success. Much more convenient than battling garden pests and weeds when grown in the ground and much easier to clean when picked.
