Container Grown Tomatoes

My yearly seed ordering deer-in-the-headlights panic/procrastination has once again proved to be a mistake. I just went to order (well, not exactly pull the credit card trigger--I have to dither a wee bit more), when I saw that the Juliete tomatoes from Johnny's Selected Seeds are backordered!
I bought some of these sweet beauties at a farmers' market last summer and was smitten. The grower told me they were easy to grow and huge producers, so they hit the tomato trifecta for me - taste, production and ease.
I guess I'm going to have to search the web now for other vendors of these must have tomatoes.
What's on your must grow tomato list?

Happy growing!

Thanks Terry! Dave’s Garden can be such an amazing resource.
I also found them at Fedco, which is a local Maine company, but if I only order one package, with handling and shipping, it will cost close to $7.
If I order more seeds the price goes down. Uh-oh….there may be a seed buying spree in my future.
I noticed there are also some DG members with seeds to trade – someone might send you some for postage, or trade you for something you have
Then again, a flat shipping fee can make it feasible to add a LOT more seeds to your list. (Spoken like an enabler, right?)

Terry – I’m beginning to feel like a need a seed therapist to deal with my fear of seed commitment.
I completely understand! I told myself I would only grow from the seeds I saved from last year (about 10 varieties of veggies), but here I am (after a seed-spree) with over 100 seed varieties and only a small plot to grow them in. I can’t leave any out from planting, we don’t want any hurt feelings, right? Is it tacky to have container gardens on your sidewalk? Lol!
Happy Gardening, Everyone!
Tomatoes are on my must grow list every year. I plant one or two plants in an old whiskey barrel cut in half. I love the old heirloom varieties like Cherokee Purple and Cherokee Green. These two produce plenty for my family of four. Oh, and they taste like real tomatoes, not cardboard.
P.S. The Cherokee Green make excellent fried green tomatoes.
Steph – Not tacky, but wonderful to garden on a sidewalk! However, I just had a friend get fined by her town for planting a beautiful garden in the “hell strip” outside of her yard. I love growing lots of seeds and giving them to friends or donating them to local organizations’ plant sales. Also, there are lots of places to swap seeds.
Gary – I’m totally with you on the Cherokee Purple and Green. Also discovered black cherry and Juliettes last year and NEED to find them again. I spaced and didn’t save seeds from the black cherries. Don’t think you can save the Juliettes. Send pictures of your barrels!
