While the weather is tempting us all to plant wayyyy too early, there are many flowering plants that thrive in the cool weather. Pansies, violas, diascia, verbena and petunias are just some annuals that will take chilly temps. If you see a plant you are dying to buy, and you live in a place where frost might still be a possibility, look at the plant tag, or ask a sales person, how much cold the plant will tolerate.
If all else fails and cold weather is forecast, either bring your containers inside or cover them.

Hi Kerry – Thanks so much for this story! Incredibly helpful. A lot of people, including my wife, are eager to start planting early. So your list of 5 annuals above is GREAT! I also like your warning in your other post about Mother Nature being notoriously fickle! Have a great weekend!
