I usually do terrariums in the winter, but as I was pulling apart my pansies, I thought .....hmmmm...wouldn't these look cool under glass? I have about a gazillion mason jars for canning and freezing and just general storage, so I figured I would make a mason jar terrarium. I made the smaller one first and then thought it would be even cooler in a larger jar. I also wanted to make it super simple so skipped the usual terrarium steps.
If you put some raffia or a ribbon around the lid, I think they would make great teacher gifts.

How absolutely lovely — both as terrariums and as a photo! You really have an incredible eye, Kerry!
Hey Emmon – Many thanks. Your comments make my day!
What a great idea!! We live in a city townhouse and have pets so we are limited to a balcony garden. I really want something indoors but also have allergies and , of course, have to worry about pets getting into plants indoors. I like to preserve my own fresh jams, jellies, etc so I have mason jars! You can get them right in the grocery store. I am going to make some of these to decorate the house and bring nature inside in a way I can enjoy without worrying about pets eating it!
Hi Terri – Actually pansies are edible! Wouldn’t hurt you or your pets. That said, if you want long lasting terrariums, there are all kinds of plants you can use. I’m going to try some tiny ferns too.
Here’s a list of some of my favorite terrarium plants:
