My kids love gardening - well parts of gardening, anyhow - they like planting and eating. That said, they are usually happy to help me with my container gardening and have been doing it since they were tiny.
I think gardening with kids is important. It teaches them about real food and where it comes from - also, patience, bugs and death. Even if it's just a container of peas, or one sunflower, watching the process of things growing and dying is part of what makes us human and it's something we forget at our peril.
