One of the amazing perks of this job is that people send me plants. Many plant breeders send out new varieties to garden writers to trial (and write about) before they become widely available. I never know when a box of plants will arrive on my doorstep.

Recently, Costa Farms send me the most amazing hibiscus from their new Tropic Escape line. At first I wasn't so sure about it. I wondered if it was a bit too much, but in the last few weeks I have become completely smitten and a little obsessed with this plant. Part of the reason I love it so is that it is fascinating to photograph. The colors are extraordinary--like finding a different small painting to shoot every day. The leaves are also a beautiful color and texture. They are deep green and incredibly glossy (ok, I realize I'm gushing a bit but that is what happens when one has a new crush).

I pick a flower in the evening and bring it inside to float  in a shallow bowl and if I'm going to a friend's house I will bring along a blossom as a gift.

Let me know if you need a babysitter for any of these DELICIOUS hibiscus this winter. SERIOUSLY. I’d read them books, sing them songs, I’d rock them to sleep at night!!!
