I'm always curious as to whether I should consider raised beds container gardens.
What's your opinion. Is a raised bed a container garden?

Sure they are, they have sides and you have to add soil. I’d love more information about how to garden successfully in raised beds
I am not certain if you could call them anything else. It is contained and stops the spread of plants and the mixture of soil from the ground around it, thus i would consider them a contained garden. They fun to have and make the yard look great!
Suhkmandir – I will write some articles on planting in raised beds. Thanks!
Eric – Thanks for your response–I agree with everything you say.
Raised garden beds “rock.” I maintain and plant the gardens at my complex. They create an awesome curb appeal and spice up the property to look “5 star.” I’ve planted perennials and ground covers to spill over the sides. The plans are same as gardens ground level, but these “raised beds” are soooo easy to work on and not to worry about many weeds at all. Load them up with compost and you are ready to plant. “Container” beds ? Yes.
Hey Kathleen – Great idea to plant ground covers to spill over the sides. If you have photos I’d love to see them.
Thanks!
Kerry
I agree with Eric 100%! If a raised bed has a bottom to keep weeds out, and especially if it has its own soil mix — rather than ground soil — I think it’s definitely a container. If someone needed a final clincher, add portability! Some are, some aren’t, but a portable raised bed? Isn’t that what a container really is? I say container all the way! Have a GREAT day!

Thanks Emmon! I guess I better start writing more about raised beds! I love them-especially the portable ones.
Kerry — have you gone waist-high yet with a raised bed? I visited one gardener in the L.A. area who had one in the center of her backyard, roughly the height and size of a rectangular dining table for 8 people. I was really impressed at how she didn’t need to bend at all to work her plants. She also — if I remember right — had large rubber rolling wheels on the bottom so she could move it. I almost wonder if someone could take an old dining table and make a DIY raised bed out of it… Have a good weekend! -Emmon
