Finishing Where I Started

Biannual Plant Drag

It kind of cracks me up that every year I finish the gardening season just the way I started it -- with an epic plant drag. This weekend, I cleaned, re-potted, where necessary, and did triage to choose the plants which will take part in my own version of "Survivor." Hopefully some will make it through a winter of  haphazard care, lack of light and general houseplant neglect. To start their training for the long dark winter, I've parked them in my garage on little red wagons, donated by friends and scrounged from yard sales.

As the night temps are regularly dipping below 50 °F, the happiness threshold of most tropical plants, I will pull all the wagons into the garage for the night and out again during the day to take advantage of light and warmth. I will acclimate the plants slowly to the lack of sunlight they will eventually have to tolerate in the various death zones of my house.
