Now is a great time to buy bulbs to plant in containers for spring blooms. You can find great deals at local nurseries and online. I recently saw that Breck's is having a "Grab Bag Sale" where you can get $100 worth of bulbs for $25. While you do take your chances on these deals, I've had pretty good luck with them and kind of like the element of surprise. Also Holland Bulb Farms is having a sale on lots of spring blooming bulbs that you need to plant now.

That said, to be honest, I've had limited luck with planting bulbs in containers in the fall and having them bloom in the spring. I've had huge problems with critters going to extreme lengths to eat my carefully planted bulbs. And even if they don't eat them they seem to like digging them up and throwing them around my deck, just for recreation.

However, that doesn't stop me from trying to make a go of it most years and planting at least one pot of bulbs. This year I've just planted grape hyacinths, which I absolutely adore. I've covered my container with plastic screening to foil the critters. We'll see what happens.
